In a Different Light

A non-paper can be used
for graphical purposes.

Project Summary

I was assigned to do experiments with a material of choice. I chose to work with the, in my eyes, unseen material: baking paper. To show that even a non-paper can be used for graphical purposes. I was curious to do experiments with something that we use daily, but for one purpose only: to bake.

The final result is a box with baking paper that includes: an instruction printed on the paper and the map/maps of (my city) Maassluis finely cut with a laser cutter. I aim to make packaging with meaning, a message or an important topic. The whole project is inspired by the topic of the unseen and my home town Maassluis. A city, the one you live in to be more specific, can be unappreciated. I found this an important topic that needed to be addressed. And my goal is that through my design, I can help make people re-discover their city. Next to the box, I also created a booklet with every experiment leading up to my final work. Catagorizing them and using my photography, notes and observations as content.

I got to learn how to write and think about clear instructions, so other people can re-create what I've done. I chose to keep is simplistic, this fits the purpose better because I give instructions for a very specific method of using a laser cutter. I designed the box to be black and white, because the baking paper has a very warm color. This creates an interesting contrast. It's like you have some "light" inside the box. The lines re-present the borders of a country or city.
